As a young man, Lincoln took up residence in New Salem, Illinois, where he was a surveyor, postmaster and a storekeeper. He eventually sold his store interest to his partner, William Berry, and held notes for debts that he assumed Berry would eventually pay. 'Twas not to be. Berry was too fond of the whiskey inventory, and when the business tanked, Lincoln was left with a handful of unpaid notes. |
